Lead Off Event The National Trophy Rifle competitions starts on Sunday. This year, the M16 match is held in conjunction with the US Army lead Small Arms Firing School. The competitors are issued a rack grade US Army M16 for the school and match. The top 10% of the competitors, who do not have any EIC points, earn a 4 point introductary leg.

National Trophy Contenders Although impossible to predict who will win any match, the following shooters are regarded as the major contenders for the three major National Tropies: Presidents 100, Daniel Boone, and Mountain Main.

* SFC Norman Anderson USA: In 2005, Anderson became the first shooter to win the National Trophy Individual, the Daniel Boone Trophy, in consecutive years. He also won both the Presidents and Mountain Man trophy.

* SPC Brandon Green USA: Green is quickly becoming the Army's top service rifle shooter. After winning the individual title in this year's interservice championships, he may be the shooter to beat at this year's National Trophy matches.

* Konrad Powers: Powers' has two of the top 11 EIC scores in 2006, a 494 and a 489, as well as a 494 from 2004. Last year he also won the Nathan Hale Trophy, for the top civilian in the NTI.

* Thomas Rider: Rider has the highest EIC score fired in the past two years, a 495, shot on the 4 June 2006. Rider has flirted with winning a major trophy in the past, finishing 6th in the Mountain Man in 2004, 8th in 2003, and 10th for the National Trophy Individual in 2004.

The National Trophy, commonly referred to as the Dogs of War Trophy, awarded to the high team in the National Trophy Team match.

The prestigous Mountain Man Trophy, awarded to the high individual in the Presidents 100, NTI, and NTT aggregate.
