In May 1974, First Lieutenant Charles H. Thornton, Jr.

became the first black Marine officer to earn the Distinguished MarksmanshipBadge. In 1978, he added to his noteworthy accomplishments when heachieved another first by earning the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge.
