SGT Richard began his shooting career in 1971 at the age of 13 with the Boy Scouts and then migrated to 100 yard bench rest rifle. In 1994, he had developed into one of the best combat rifle shooters in the country. In his 34 years of competitive marksmanship, he has earned the Pistol President's Hundred Tab (2000 & 2001), Distinguished Rifleman Badge (1997), the Distinguished Pistol Badge (2002), and National Guard Chief's 50 Marksmanship Badge in rifle and sniper (numerous time). He is respected as one of the best all around combat rifle and pistol shooters in the country - by all the other military service competitors nationwide. He continues to serve as a shooter and coach for the All Guard Combat Team, and is a shooter for the National Match Rifle Team. He has helped these teams win numerous awards and accomplishments. His contributions to marksmanship include being a member of several All Guard National and International teams, state shooting team, and is a guard member who is still active in the shooting program today. His guidance as a shooter and coach has contributed to the success of the All Guard Combat Team. Within the state of Indiana and the United States National Guard, he is revered as the epitome of excellence in marksmanship. His leadership, coaching ability, and dedication to marksmanship continues to set the example.
